How Convenience Stores Increased Profit in 2020 and 2021

While gas stations saw a large decrease in profits for the year of 2020, with the world staying home indoors and the lack of work commute, the increase in profit from their convenience store foodservice offerings is what drove the ultimate change and pivot for their operation - and that trend continues to last even as the world returns to normal.

Let's Look at the Data:

According to NACS Retailer Member Pulse Survey, 59% of c-store operators in the United States reported an increase for in-store foodservice sales. As the world shut down and limited business hours, convenience stores became a staple in essential businesses - especially for truckers on the road with decreased food offerings. C-stores began to switch their offerings, and began to focus on more prepared foods and grab-and-go menu options.

Healthier options were added, thus increasing the desire for cold food storage, and grab-and-go. Point of sales were re-designed to incorporate new menu options, and hot prepared food options. That is in addition to the extra safety guards such as plexiglass hanging and installed barriers to protect the staff from any virus spread. Another NACS survey also showed that c-store retailers added or extended their offer around more in-demand products. In fact, 39% of retailers focused more on cleaning/toiletry items and 34% focused more on grocery items.
